Currently, the apron and foundation for the terminal building works in the airport were completed. Due to the pandemic, the works progressed slowly and they gained momentum with decline in the severity of the virus. “Initially, the terminal building works were proposed to be completed by August 2022. The contractor has also taken up apron works at an estimated cost of Rs 27.5 crore, which will facilitate in parking of large aircraft such as Boeing 777 and 747. Other facilities include 24 check-in counters, six aerobridges, baggage conveyor belts in both arrival and departure blocks, 14 immigration and four custom counters, 24X7 CCTV monitoring cell. The terminal building is being built using precast steel and glass on the lines of Surat, Varanasi and Prayagraj airports. The airport is also expected to get an explosive licence by next month as fuel will be stored at the site.The new terminal building, once opened, can accommodate 400 foreign and 800 domestic passengers at a time. NIAL CEO Arun Vir Singh said, “The boundary wall work of the airport is almost complete. EIL has been appointed to oversee construction work of the airport. Besides that, an 11kV capacity substation has also been set up at the site to meet the initial power requirement of the airport, officials said. In its first monthly report to NIAL, the state government’s special purpose vehicle to oversee and coordinate on the airport project, Engineers India Limited (EIL) has informed that construction of a support building has started at the airport site. Metro is one of the options being explored. The UP government is still exploring options to connect the airport, which is in Jewar off the Yamuna Expressway, to Noida and Delhi. “We also plan to develop a ground transportation centre that will feature a multimodal transit hub, housing metro and high-speed rail stations, taxi, bus services and private parking,” the YIAPL official added. The plan for the second runway accommodates a bigger strip of 4,150 metres. The second is envisaged to be much bigger, about three times in size.

The entire airport project is slated to be built over four phases by the end of 2061. NIA, which will become the second international airport in NCR – giving the Delhi region that unique distinction – is meant to handle 12 million passengers annually. The agreement has a stiff penalty clause of Rs 10 lakh per day if the deadline is missed. The precise deadline, according to the agreement signed by the state government and Zurich AG, is September 29, 2024. A spokesperson for Yamuna International Airport Private Limited (YIAPL), the special purpose vehicle of NIA concessionaire Zurich AG, told TOI on Tuesday the terminal building and runway will be ready by the last quarter of 2024, in time for the scheduled operation of commercial flights.
